Burlington, Iowa on the Mississippi
One of the first Main Street communities in Iowa, Burlington has seen a remarkable resurgence in downtown development in the past several decades. Main Street Burlington was founded in 1986 to encourage reuse and reinvestment in the historic downtown. In 1996, the nonprofit organization changed its name to Downtown Partners, Inc., recognizing the crucial role of public and private enterprise working together to shape a successful downtown.
Downtown Partners is a division of the Greater Burlington Partnership with its own Board of Directors, bylaws, and budget. The Board acts as the Organization committee, augmented by the work of the Design, Business Development, and Marketing & Promotions committees, and administered by an Executive Director. Downtown Partners has been the catalyst for many aspects of downtown revitalization with successful events, public art and façade improvement programs, start up business assistance, redevelopment projects, and a railroad quiet zone, to name but a few.
Upper story residential development of previously vacant space is bringing new people downtown and attracting businesses to serve them. With a wide variety of restaurants, cultural institutions, shops, and more, all in a setting of significant historic buildings along the Mississippi River, downtown Burlington remains the strong beating heart of the community.
